Chin Implants

A chin implant procedure involves safely inserting a pliable, boomerang shaped implant into the chin to help improve its overall shape and appearance. This is often combined with a rhinoplasty, and is performed using a small incision under the chin, such that the scar is hidden in the shadow.

What to expect on the day

Chin implants are inserted using a general anaesthetic, and you can usually go home on the same day.

An incision may be internally (in the natural crease on the underside of the chin) or externally (where the lower lip meets the gum), depending which approach your surgeon decides is the best. This creates a space where the implant can be inserted, and works to complement the natural bone structure.

The implants are made of a soft, yet robust, synthetic material that feels similar to the natural tissues of the chin. Each implant is custom made to suit the exact size required, which is designed to follow the natural contouring of the face.

Treatment Time

Around 90 minutes. We use a general anaesthetic and you can usually go home on the same day.

Downtime

Expect about one week off work, longer if your role is physically demanding.

⁠Reasonable Mobility

We recommend patients begin gentle movement around two days after surgery. Light activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and carrying out basic daily tasks are encouraged to support circulation and recovery.

Sport & Exercise

Gentle walking is fine within a few days, but strenuous exercise should wait at least six weeks.

Driving

Most patients can resume driving two weeks after surgery, provided they feel comfortable.

Shower

You can usually shower after two days, avoiding direct pressure or heat on the chin area.

Full Recovery

It takes around six weeks for swelling to settle after chin implant surgery in London, with final results visible after three to six months.

Maintenance

Chin implants provide permanent results, though natural ageing will continue to change facial contours.

Chin implants create stronger definition and balance facial proportions, improving side and front profiles.

Showering After a Chin Implants

You may be able to shower the next day after having chin implants. However, you will need to keep the face dry for up to 1 week.

Follow Up and Aftercare

As the chin will be sore after the procedure you may need to consume a diet that consists of soft foods and liquids so as to limit chewing. We will always follow up your surgery after 1 week when dressings are usually removed. Most side effects (including tautness and swelling) will have significantly eased and moving the lower face will be more comfortable. Full recovery may take up to 6 weeks, when more strenuous activities may be resumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be any scarring?

Incisions are made in places where scarring is barely noticeable. Depending on your individual circumstances, the most appropriate approach will be taken whereby an incision will be made internally or externally.

Am I a suitable candidate?

REAL plastic surgery will always carry out an in-depth consultation before any procedure is confirmed. In many cases chin implants are recommended when the natural appearance of the chin is weak or receding, causing discontent for the affected person. We will not go ahead with a procedure unless you are totally sure it is the right solution for you.

When can I expect to see results?

It may take up to 4 months before the final result is noticeable. This is the usual amount of time it takes for all swelling and bruising to subside, and for the underlying tissues to respond to the procedure and heal effectively.

This is a little tour of the ambulatory area (the closest we have to a traditional 'ward' for our patients - as you can see it is 'compact' - this is very deliberate - the bays are all very close to theatres, and the recovery room. Scar Removal

A detached retina describes a condition in which the retina comes away from its supporting tissues at the back of the eye. The retina is a thin layer of light sensitive nerve cells and a healthy retina is imperative to clear vision. Retinal detachment can occur due to damage, trauma or injury, inflammation or structural changes to the eye that occur over time.

Symptoms of retinal detachment may include; sudden flashes of light in the peripheral vision (outside of the central field of vision), a sudden increase in floaters (black strand like debris in the field of vision that appear to be floating and are particularly noticeable when looking at a plain surface), shadowing of the peripheral vision that appears to be moving toward the central field of vision and a sensation that a semi transparent curtain is covering / impairing the vision.

Depending on the type and severity of retinal detachment, the appropriate type of surgery required will vary. In essence, all retinal detachment surgery aims to repair holes or tears in the retina and / or traction or pulling. The outlook for retinal detachment surgery is very good, with 90% of cases being successfully at the first operation, but time from symptoms to treatment is crucial, so don’t delay.

Face Lift

A Macular hole is a gap in the part of the retina that is most sensitive to light, and as such is responsible for the central vision. The hole causes a gap in your central vision, making it difficult to read, see faces or see detail when looking at something. The peripheral vision is usually preserved and is not affected by the hole in the macula. Macula holes occur in approximately 1 in 10,000 people. Unfortunately, if it happens in one eye, there is a much greater chance of it also happening in the other eye.

Macular Hole Surgery

Floaters occur most frequently due to the vitreous jelly separating from the retina (light sensitive layer) behind it. If you see new floaters, or flashing of lights, this could signify that the vitreous jelly is coming away from the retina and you should see an ophthalmologist straight away as there is a chance that as the jelly separates, a tear in the retina can form. Urgent treatment can reduce the risk of retinal detachment.
If you have stable, longstanding floaters in your vision, these can removed by a procedure that removes the vitreous jelly (vitrectomy). The operation takes less than an hour, and typically you will need 1-2 weeks off work.

Flashes and floaters

An epiretinal membrane occurs when a thin layer of tissue forms over the retina, at the back of the eye. This can happen when the jelly in the eye (vitreous) comes away from the retina, or following surgery or inflammation of the eye. The membrane, also known as macular pucker or cellophane maculopathy can cause visual difficulties when the membrane contracts, distorting a person’s central vision. If the membrane is symptomatic, an operation known as vitrectomy is often the best treatment - unfortunately contact lenses or glasses alone will not treat the membrane.

Breast Enlargement

It is very common for a woman’s breasts to begin to take on a less pert appearance over time. This may be due to a number of reasons, such as; ageing, post-pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss.
