4. A Bulbous Tip
Similar to a boxy tip but more rounded in appearance, a bulbous tip is typically the result of thicker cartilage or soft tissue at the end of the nose. Rhinoplasty can reduce and reshape this cartilage to create a more defined, proportionate tip.
5. A Drooping Tip
Some patients notice the tip of the nose pulling downward, particularly when smiling, due to overactive muscles connecting the lip and nasal tip. Though subtle, this can be a persistent source of self-consciousness, and can be corrected by adjusting the muscle and cartilage responsible for the movement.

What Happens During Rhinoplasty?
The procedure is carried out under either intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on what’s appropriate for your case. Access to the nasal structure is gained through a closed technique, with incisions hidden inside the nose, or an open technique, with a small incision across the columella, the strip of tissue between the nostrils.
From there, the underlying bone and cartilage are reshaped. This may involve removing tissue to reduce size, or adding cartilage grafts, typically taken from the septum, where more structure is needed. If the septum itself is deviated, it can be straightened at the same time to improve breathing.
Once reshaping is complete, the skin is redraped and incisions closed. A splint is usually fitted to support the nose during the first stage of healing.
Recovery After Rhinoplasty Surgery
The first few days after surgery are usually the most noticeable in terms of appearance, though not necessarily in terms of discomfort. Swelling and bruising, particularly around the eyes, tend to peak within the first 48 to 72 hours before gradually improving. A splint is typically fitted to protect and support the new shape of the nose, and this is usually removed within the first week, along with any internal packing.
Most patients find that visible swelling and bruising have settled significantly within three to four weeks, at which point the nose starts to look and feel much closer to its final shape. However, subtle refinement, particularly around the tip, continues for considerably longer. It’s common for the very last stages of healing, and the truest final result, to take up to a year to fully emerge, as deeper tissue settles and any residual swelling resolves.
During recovery, some temporary numbness or altered sensation around the tip of the nose is normal, as is mild congestion or difficulty breathing through the nose in the initial weeks. Mild discomfort is expected and usually manageable, though this varies from person to person, and Mr Cavale will advise on what’s appropriate for your individual case.
