Laser Skin Resurfacing

Sciton® Erbium Laser

Erbium laser skin resurfacing is an excellent option for those who want to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scars.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing is a non-surgical method of skin tightening that uses light energy to instantly remove the top layers of the skin. The depth of skin removed can be altered according to the patient’s requirements and available ‘downtime’.

The technology behind the Sciton® Erbium Laser allows us to customise every procedure, and tailor treatments according to the nature of the issues you want to correct and the outcomes you are looking for.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing– While we use BBL or HALO treatments for less invasive, less downtime procedures, the Erbium Laser gives the most dramatic results. It can result in striking improvements, even in deep wrinkles. It also results in significant tightening of the skin and will generally make the skin appear 5-10 years younger.

The following can be targeted by Erbium:

  • facial lines and wrinkles – mild to deep
  • lip lines (ageing lines/smokers lines)
  • blemishes and pigmentation – particularly brown marks on the face, neck or hands
  • sun damage
  • acne scars and scarring
  • skin texture, tone and elasticity
  • Scar revision
  • facial redness and birthmarks
  • removal of skin lesions – skin tags, moles, warts etc.

The Sciton® Erbium Laser is a fractionated laser. The key difference between fractionated laser treatments and the more traditional ablative methods (such as CO2 lasers) is that fractionated lasers do not take off the entire outer layer of the skin at once. CO2 lasers treat the total surface of the skin; by contrast, fractionated lasers use a very narrow column of targeted light to pinpoint areas deep in the skin. The fractionated laser penetrates just deep enough (hence ‘fraction’) to stimulate significant collagen regeneration, while the surrounding unaffected areas help speed up recovery. Healing time, downtime, redness, and pain during the procedure are much reduced with fractionated lasers like Sciton®’s Erbium laser, compared to CO2 and other ablative lasers.

What to expect on the day

We offer an in depth consultation to determine best treatment plan for you in the first instance. This includes a VISIA scan which captures high resolution pictures of your face assessing various skin health factors such as wrinkles, pores, pigmentation, sun damage, redness, and even underlying issues not visible to the naked eye. You will receive these results along with a quotation for your specific plan and treatment dates to choose from. Treatment can be on same day is possible if suitable in your schedule for lesion removal, scar revision and smaller treatments, otherwise, we can book you in at your nearest convenience.

On the day of your Erbium laser treatment, you can expect a relatively quick and procedure. First, the Surgeon or Nurse Practitioner will clean the treatment area, its generally best to attend without make up for facial areas.

We use a high-grade topical anaesthetic cream to the numb the treatment area before this procedure, for full resurfacing this can be carried out under sedation. You’ll be given protective eyewear to wear throughout the use of the laser. As the treatment begins, you’ll feel a sensation or mild tingling. The skin will begin to feel warm in the treated area and this can continue for some time following the treatment. The session typically lasts 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the area(s) being treated. Afterwards, your skin may appear red, similar to sunburn in the treated area, it can also feel itchy.

The following day, the skin may appear slightly swollen and perhaps still slightly red and warm. This will continue for 5-7 days following treatment scar revision or lesion removal, when the skin will comfortably peel, while you keep it moisturised with your post treatment cream, leaving the area feeling smooth.

Full resurfacing and more advanced treatments can take longer to heal, up to 7-10 days, your consultant will discuss this with you during consultation.

It’s important to follow any individual post-care instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is Erbium Laser treatment, and how does it work?

Erbium Laser treatment is a non-invasive skin resurfacing procedure that targets fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture irregularities. Using a specific wavelength of laser, it precisely removes the outer layers of damaged skin while stimulating collagen production in deeper layers. This encourages new skin growth, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin. The Erbium Laser is especially effective for those seeking subtle and natural-looking improvements with minimal downtime.

  • What skin concerns can Erbium Laser treatment address?

Erbium Laser treatment is highly effective in treating a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. It's also suitable for minimizing age spots, improving skin texture, and even reducing the appearance of certain types of scars. Because it’s gentler than other laser treatments, Erbium Laser is a great option for patients looking for precise and controlled skin rejuvenation.

  • How long is the recovery time for Erbium Laser treatment?

Recovery time after Erbium Laser treatment is typically shorter than other laser procedures, with most patients experiencing redness and slight peeling for about 5-7 days. Some may resume daily activities within a day or two, depending on the treatment depth and skin type. Results gradually improve over several weeks as collagen rebuilds, offering a refreshed and rejuvenated complexion with minimal disruption to daily life.
