Liposuction

Liposuction is an effective body contouring procedure that can help to slim and sculpt various areas of the face and body. Stubborn fat can be a frustrating concern that many people experience despite leading a healthy and active lifestyle, whereby small pockets of fat seem difficult to shift.

What to Expect on the Day

Liposuction is also known as liposculpture, or ‘lipo’. Common areas of the face and body that are addressed using this procedure include: under the chin, chest, breasts, upper arms, stomach, hips, back, buttocks, thighs and knees.

Depending on which area(s) is being treated a series of small incisions are made in the skin. A cannula is inserted into these cuts which is then moved around to help disperse the fat. A tube is attached to the cannula which then removes the fat from the body in small amounts using suction. Sutures will close the wounds and in some cases you will be asked to wear a compression garment to help the skin adapt to its new position.

Liposuction can offer a long-term solution for reducing pinchable pockets of fat, and can be used alongside other procedures to help improve the overall appearance of the face and body, including: abdominoplasty, arm lift, thigh lift, gynaecomastia and fat grafting (also known as fat transfer).

Treatment Time

Liposuction can take around 1 - 3 hours, depending on the number of areas that are being treated. At Real Plastic Surgery we use a general anaesthetic and you may be able to go home the same day.

Downtime

You may need to take 7 - 10 days off work and most people have significantly recovered within 2 weeks. Compression garments need to be worn for 6 to 12 weeks, and you might choose to undergo lymphatic massage to help after surgery.

Reasonable Mobility

We recommend patients begin gentle movement around two days after surgery. Light activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and carrying out basic daily tasks are encouraged to support circulation and recovery.

Sport & Exercise

You may need to avoid strenuous exercise and the gym for up to 8 weeks.

Driving

Driving is usually possible after 5–7 days, once you feel comfortable and are no longer on strong pain medication.

Shower

You can usually shower after 48 hours, but baths, swimming, and saunas should be avoided until cleared by your surgeon.

Full Recovery

Reason for doing this?

To create a slimmer and more toned appearance of the body.

Reasons to Avoid

If you have any doubts. Our team of experts will provide support and guidance all the way through your treatment journey; using the consultation to determine your suitability and your certainty.

Showering After a Liposuction

Very small incisions are made during the liposuction procedure which often heal within a few days. We advise that you wait for dressings to be removed and for sufficient healing to have taken place before you shower, which in this case may be 3 or 4 days.

Follow Up and Aftercare

Our team will want to follow up with you 1 week after the procedure. Your final review will be 6 weeks after surgery and for a few months you will need to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting, as well as sun exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I suitable for this procedure?

Both men and women can be considered for liposuction, if small pockets of localised stubborn fat are causing aesthetic concern. We may not recommend this procedure if it is to remove significant areas of fat, and is thought of as a solution for ‘losing weight’.

There may be some slight scarring as incisions are made in the skin. These cuts however, are very small and when scarring has faded, they may be hard to notice.

It is normal for patients to experience swelling and minor bruising after the procedure. This will have significantly eased within 1 or 2 weeks, and you will feel more comfortable to continue with your usual routine. All swelling and bruising may take several weeks to disappear completely.
