What is Scar Revision in London?
Scar revision, also known as scar reduction or scar removal, is a surgical procedure that uses surgical techniques to remove a scar or dramatically reduce and improve its appearance. Scarring can be caused by many different things, including injuries or previous medical procedures, such as a C-section or breast surgery. Visible scars can have a long-term impact on a person’s confidence, and depending on where the scar is located, it may affect what they choose to wear or feel comfortable doing.

Why Consider a Scar Revision?
Scar revision can help improve the appearance of scars that have healed poorly or are affecting your confidence. Every time the skin is cut or injured, some form of scarring occurs, but not all scars are the same. Factors like your skin type, the area of the body, and how your skin heals all play a role in the final result. For example, scars on the face or neck tend to fade more discreetly over time, while areas like the chest are more prone to raised or visible scarring, known as keloid, especially in patients with darker skin tones.
Hypertrophic Scars vs Keloids
- Hypertrophic scars are raised but stay within the boundary of the original wound. They star off red and can be itchy, but usually improve, flatten out, and pale over time.
- Keloid scars can grow beyond the wound itself, becoming more prominent and usually raised, hard, smooth and shiny. Their colour can range from the natural skin tone to being red, purple, or darker than the s.kin tone. They are more common in certain skin types and can require specialist care to manage.

Treatment Time
Scar revision in London usually takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the technique and size of the scar.
Downtime
Most people can return to work within a few days, depending on the scar’s location and treatment.
Reasonable Mobility
You can return to normal activities the same day, though the treated area may feel tender.
Sport & Exercise
Light exercise can be resumed within a few days, but strenuous activity should wait two weeks or more.
Driving
Most patients can drive the next day, unless the scar is in an area that limits movement.

The Patient Journey: Scar Revision in London
If a scar can be improved with treatment, we will do a scar revision under local anaesthesia. There may be particular circumstances or complications of healing in the first instance that require revision, or we may be confident that we can reduce or improve scarring so it looks better than your initial scar result following surgery. The old scar is removed by an appropriate plastic surgery technique, and we may recommend further laser treatments in the future to help minimise scarring.
Pain after the minor operation is usually minimal, and we remove sutures on the face within four to six days, while other part of the body may stay for seven to ten days. That being said, dissolving sutures are frequently used on the trunk and limbs to avoid stitch marks. Stitch marks are less likely to appear on the face, as early removal encourages a smoother, less visible result. As with all surgical scars, the area will appear red at first, but this will gradually fade over time. The rate of fading varies based on skin type and the location of the scar, but typically takes between 6 and 24 months.

Can I shower after scar revision surgery?
As the treatment site will be dressed, our surgeons often advise that you wait 24 hours before showering, ensuring the wound is kept dry while they are healing. We typically see our patients 1 week after surgery, when we assess the healing wounds. Depending on your rate of recovery, our team will advise when certain activities can be resumed.
Is scar revision permanent?
This type of surgery often gives a permanent solution to reducing the appearance of scarring. In most cases, removing the scarring completely can be difficult, but it is likely that the scarring is much less noticeable. Scarring will naturally fade over time, and if a significant amount of scarring needs to be reduced, a series of procedures may be required.
Are there any side effects to scar revision?
As with many other surgical procedures that require incisions in the skin, swelling and bruising may appear. This can take a few days to settle, and the treated area may also continue to feel sensitive for a couple of weeks.
When will I see the final results of a scar revision?
The full outcome of a scar revision procedure may take up to 12 months to develop. This allows for all scarring to fade to a paler colour. This will depend on how many procedures have taken place, and the size and type of scarring that has been addressed.
What is the recovery process for scar revision?
After your scar revision procedure, you’ll be able to go home the same day. You may need mild pain relief, but most patients find recovery very manageable. We recommend taking a couple of days to rest before returning to work and avoiding any activity that puts strain on the treated area.
To support optimal healing, it’s important to keep the area protected from sun exposure for several months, either by covering up or using a high-SPF sunblock. Final results develop gradually and are usually visible between 12 to 24 months post-procedure.
