Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is the medical term for male breast enlargement, and is a common condition that affects many men and adolescent boys. Whether this concern is experienced during puberty or at some time during adulthood, it is often a harmless condition that has developed due to an excess of fat or glandular tissue. Surgery to corect it is usually a combination of liposuction and ‘open’ surgery (via incisions in the nipple skin).

What to Expect on the Day

A man can often feel self-conscious with the appearance of enlarged male breasts, also known as ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’. In many cases surgery can offer a long-term solution for restoring the natural look of the chest, and improve the overall contours of the body.

The procedure involves making an incision in the breast from which excess fat and tissue can be removed. If the removal of fat leaves behind loose skin, this too can be trimmed away before closing the wounds. Incisions will be made in the most suitable place, depending on your concerns, and in some cases liposuction can be used to help remove deposits of fat.

Gynaecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, can be performed alongside other body contouring procedures to help slim and sculpt the body – commonly when undergoing post-bariatric surgery.

Treatment Time

The time it takes to perform gynaecomastia surgery usually takes around 2 - 3 hours. At Real Plastic Surgery we use a general anaesthetic and you may be able to go home the same day.

Downtime

You will need to take 1 - 2 weeks off work with most people having significantly recovered within 6 - 8 weeks.

⁠Reasonable Mobility

You’ll be up and moving the same day, with light activity encouraged, but chest strain should be avoided for two weeks.

Sport & Exercise

You may need to avoid strenuous exercise and the gym for approx. 6 - 8 weeks.

Driving

Most patients feel comfortable driving again after about one week, once they can move freely.

Shower

You can shower the day after surgery, but it's important to keep any wounds and dressings clean and completely dry.

Full Recovery

It generally takes six weeks for swelling to ease, with final results visible in three to six months.

Maintenance

In most cases 1 procedure can produce long-term results.

Showering after gynaecomastia surgery is often possible in 1 week. This allows for the incisions to heal appropriately before they can get wet. At this time we may have removed any sutures (unless they are dissolvable) and you will have been reviewed by our team.

Follow Up and Aftercare

This may include: pain relief advice, how to look after your wounds, caring for scars and avoiding strenuous exercise. Am I suitable for this procedure?

REAL plastic surgery will establish your suitability at your pre-treatment consultation. This surgery is often recommended when excess fat, excess tissue and / or excess skin has developed at the male breast area. It can help to restore the natural appearance of the chest.

If liposuction is used small incisions are made on the breasts, and scars are often barely noticeable. In some cases incisions are made around the outside of the areola (dark skin that surrounds the nipple), which also helps to conceal the appearance of scarring.

In many cases gynaecomastia surgery will produce a result that is long-term, or may even be permanent. However, it doesn’t guarantee that fatty deposits or glandular tissue will not develop in the future. A healthy and active lifestyle can help to reduce the likelihood of gaining weight – a common cause of man boobs.

This is a little tour of the ambulatory area (the closest we have to a traditional 'ward' for our patients - as you can see it is 'compact' - this is very deliberate - the bays are all very close to theatres, and the recovery room. Nurses are very close by, so safety is excellent. We have avoided the use of closed-off rooms, which means that patient treatment is quick, safe and efficient.

Scar Removal

A detached retina describes a condition in which the retina comes away from its supporting tissues at the back of the eye. The retina is a thin layer of light sensitive nerve cells and a healthy retina is imperative to clear vision. Retinal detachment can occur due to damage, trauma or injury, inflammation or structural changes to the eye that occur over time. Symptoms of retinal detachment may include; sudden flashes of light in the peripheral vision (outside of the central field of vision), a sudden increase in floaters (black strand like debris in the field of vision that appear to be floating and are particularly noticeable when looking at a plain surface), shadowing of the peripheral vision that appears to be moving toward the central field of vision and a sensation that a semi transparent curtain is covering / impairing the vision. Depending on the type and severity of retinal detachment, the appropriate type of surgery required will vary. In essence, all retinal detachment surgery aims to repair holes or tears in the retina and / or traction or pulling. The outlook for retinal detachment surgery is very good, with 90% of cases being successfully at the first operation, but time from symptoms to treatment is crucial, so don’t delay.

Face Lift

A Macular hole is a gap in the part of the retina that is most sensitive to light, and as such is responsible for the central vision. The hole causes a gap in your central vision, making it difficult to read, see faces or see detail when looking at something. The peripheral vision is usually preserved and is not affected by the hole in the macula. Macula holes occur in approximately 1 in 10,000 people. Unfortunately, if it happens in one eye, there is a much greater chance of it also happening in the other eye.

Macular Hole Surgery

Floaters occur most frequently due to the vitreous jelly separating from the retina (light sensitive layer) behind it. If you see new floaters, or flashing of lights, this could signify that the vitreous jelly is coming away from the retina and you should see an ophthalmologist straight away as there is a chance that as the jelly separates, a tear in the retina can form. Urgent treatment can reduce the risk of retinal detachment. If you have stable, longstanding floaters in your vision, these can removed by a procedure that removes the vitreous jelly (vitrectomy). The operation takes less than an hour, and typically you will need 1-2 weeks off work.

Flashes and floaters

An epiretinal membrane occurs when a thin layer of tissue forms over the retina, at the back of the eye. This can happen when the jelly in the eye (vitreous) comes away from the retina, or following surgery or inflammation of the eye. The membrane, also known as macular pucker or cellophane maculopathy can cause visual difficulties when the membrane contracts, distorting a person’s central vision. If the membrane is symptomatic, an operation known as vitrectomy is often the best treatment - unfortunately contact lenses or glasses alone will not treat the membrane.
