Post Bariatric

Post Bariatric
Body Prodecure

Bariatric surgery is a method of weight loss that uses a surgical procedure to restrict the amount of food that can go into the stomach in one sitting, such as a gastric band. This helps the patient to feel fuller quicker and dramatically reduces the amount of food, and calories that are consumed so a person loses weight.

The time it takes to perform post bariatric surgery can depend on the number of procedures that are required. At REAL plastic surgery we use a general anaesthetic and you may be able to go home the same day.

You may need to take up to 4 weeks off work with most people having significantly recovered within 6 - 8 weeks.

In most cases 1 procedure can produce long-term results.

To improve the overall contouring of the body by removing loose skin that is left behind after significant weight loss.

You may need to avoid strenuous exercise and the gym for up to 12 weeks.

If you have any doubts. Our team of experts will provide support and guidance all the way through your treatment journey; using the consultation to determine your suitability and your certainty.

What to expect on the day

Prolonged weight gain will often overstretch the skin, and when the weight is lost, the skin can then become loose and hang off the body. Post bariatric surgery can be performed to help with loose skin on the body, removing excess skin to help reshape the body and restore natural looking contours.

At REAL plastic surgery we will carry out a full and thorough consultation before your surgery to discuss which procedures are needed to help reshape and recontour your body. This type of surgery considers the use of the following procedures: arm lift, thigh lift, abdominoplasty, buttock lift, breast uplift and gynaecomastia (breast reduction for men), and is completely tailored to suit your needs. Depending on the number of treatments that are recommended we may approach the treatment in stages, but this will be discussed at the consultation.

This type of surgery can be quite invasive and recovery time can take several weeks. Compression garments will need to be worn and there will be a degree of scarring on the body. However, the results can completely transform the shape and appearance of the body, and restore your self-confidence.

Showering after post-bariatric surgery

The body will be quite tender and will have dressings applied to the areas that have been treated. Therefore we will ask that you do not shower for around 2 weeks after the procedure as these wounds will need to be kept dry while they are healing.

Follow up and aftercare

It is likely that you will need to take some pain relief while the body heals, and our expert team of professionals will ensure you are given information on how to care for your wounds as well as when to resume certain activities. You will be required to attend follow-up appointments at the clinic 1 week, 3 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How much scarring can I expect?

The area on the underside of the arms can become saggy for a variety of reasons, including: weight gain, weight loss and ageing. Getting rid of ‘bingo wings’ can not only create a more desirable appearance, it can also make clothing more comfortable and improve a person’s self-confidence.

  • Are the results permanent?

Post-bariatric surgery is intended to provide long-term, body contouring results. Bariatric surgery can help to continually control your appetite and if this is combined with a healthy and active lifestyle, the chance of future weight gain is minimised.

  • Am I suitable for this procedure?

REAL plastic surgery will consider you for this type of surgery if bariatric surgery has meant that losing a significant amount of weight has also meant that loose skin on various areas of the body has developed.
